Girl Lost Legs To Save Roommates
Over 400 students were in the dormitory building of Muyu Middle School when the quake struck Qingchuan, a county in Sichuan. Hundreds dead and hundreds rescued, among which He Cuiqing, a 13 years old girl, was the 89th.
When the quake hit at 14:28 p.m. on May 12, He was out in an open ground outside the dormitory and spared no time before returning to wake up her schoolmates. Over 10 students were able to escape before she was buried under the collapsed building.
When He was pulled out from the debris 50 hours after the quake, a nurse named Wang Guangfen took care of her.
“With blood stains on the chest, she appeared fragile and weak,” Wang said.
“But she was still conscious, and called me ‘aunt’ when I reached her,” she added.
Another rescuer said he heard hers voice, “uncle, save me,”, “If any unfortunate had happened to her, the voice could haunt me for the rest of my life,” he said.
Exsanguinated too long, she lost her legs. “My only regret was not being able to save more” she said when during the interview at bedside in Guangyuan Central Hospital.
Then she started crying for lost friends.
Heroic Teacher Saved Four
With both arms extended, shielding four students from being crushed under a desk, Tan Qianqiu, a 51 years old middle school teacher in Deyang, Sichuan, was found under rubble the first day after the quake.
The four children were saved, but Tan, 51, left his wife and two daughters forever.
Tan’s wife, Zhang Guanrong, cleaned her husband’s face.
She recalls Tan getting up at 6 on Monday morning, the day the quake struck, dressing their baby daughter and taking the child for a walk before leaving for work.
In an article authored by Tan Junzi, Tan’s elder daughter, who studies law at Peking University, Tan is described to be a typical Chinese citizen.
“My father was a most simple teacher, who loved his career but felt sorry that the city he lived in was too far from his hometown for him to take care of his parents.”
“He (Tan Qianqiu) always said that he just hoped the younger generation could lead a better life and therefore wasn’t too strict with me. However, I could feel how he shared my success, as well as, how he spared my sorrows.”
Millions of netizens have likened one heroic teacher to majestic eagle, as one of them wrote: “We shall forever remember the eternal moment. Your extending arms carry the full meaning of your profession and great love.”
Just One More
Jing Li Jie, 19 years old, a firefighter from Mian Yang, Sichuan, one of the towns that that suffered most from the earthquake.
Jing is one of the soldiers that is participating the rescue work in Wudu primary school, which collapsed during the quake, leaving over 100 buried.
Aftershocks unpredicted, Jing and other firefighters continued. Rescue work was just on the way when an aftershock struck. Retreat was ordered when Jing heard somebody murmured for help. He tried to return to do something, before his colleagues pulled him to the safe zone.
Kneeling to the ground, Jing cried: “I know how dangerous it can be, but please, please just let me save just one more!”
His voice was obscured one second later, when a wall collapsed.

The hero and the heroine:
Zheng Guangming, born in 1986, a former clothing salesman who has resigned to take care of his girlfriend.
He Chenxi, born in 1982, a cashier in the Beichuan Branch of the Agriculture Development Bank, Zheng’s girlfriend.
“What a full moon!” , He Chenxi sighed, when she was rescued from the ruins of a bank 104 hours after the earthquake.
After the earthquake, her boyfriend Zheng Guangming was so motivated by strong belief and intuition that he set foot in every inch of Beichuan and Mianyang(two towns that suffered much from the quake). “Let’s get married(when you are out). Which kind of wedding do you prefer, traditional or Western?”, Zheng chatted with her through the slot of the ruins continiously during the 18 hours before the arrival of the rescue team. Zheng said that their love was amplified and it was the power of people helped them that saved his girlfriend.
■China Inspired By The Story Of The Optimistic Young Man
Many audience concerned about the earthquake was impressed by the scene that when a girl called He Chenxi was rescued, a lean young man rushed after the stretcher and covered the girl with his shirt. When He was receiving a transfusion, the boy tickled: “Now two kind of beverage is ready for the transfusion, which do you prefer, Cola or Yingyang Kuanxian(a milk-like beverage made in China)?” Many people were inspired by the words, they got to know not only He Chenxi, a brave girl endured 104 hours in debris, but also Dai Guangming, her lover.
On May.19, we got in touch with Zheng, who told us that He’s right foot, once likely to be amputated, was finally saved except for two toes. Nonetheless, it was fortunate enough.
■Zheng: Always Believe That She Can See The Sun
“I always believe that she would be all right and would see the sun,” said Zheng, who was surfing the Internet in He’s dorm when the earthquake struke, less than ten minutes after He went to work. “Immediately half of the house collapsed, so did the stairs. Thank goodness my room didn’t! I took the phone but got no dialing tone. I got downstairs through the jumble calling her.”
Back and forth, Zheng searched the 10 minutes road between the dorm and He’s bank three times.
Failed to find He there, Zheng turned to place crowded by people, with whom he got out of Beichuan to Mianyang, where He’s parents live. However, once again, He wasn’t there.
■He’s Dark Memory: They Died One By One
In the afternoon on May.12, a few minutes after He stepped into the bank bussiness hall, violent shaking made her fall into a dead faint. When she got waked, she felt pain all over and found two colleagues on her waist and back. Slept and dreamed three times in the dark, she could tell that water and milk was in her dreams, and that shouting for help was all she did when there was any sound outside. Despite her colleagues lost their breath one by one, He determinated to get out alive.
He’s aunt remembered the smell of the dead when rescuers succeeded to dig a hole on the roof and she couldn’t imagine how her niece could survived sharing space so limited with two bodies, one of which was just on the top of her.
■Incessant Encouragement For 18 Hours
“She was not in Mianyang, therefore she must have been under the debris in Beichuan. When I returned there with a rescue team, somebody told me that there were survivors in the bank building.” Zheng recalled, “I shouted and she responded. She thought I died. It was the fourth day after the quake.”
During the rescue, Zheng chatted with He, in case that she fell asleep. “We chatted on where we would go in the future, recollected all the happiness and sorrows we had experienced, and mentioned our wedding. From 4 o’clock early that morning to 10 o’clock in the evening, I was there 18 hours. The “Two Day Guardian” in some reports is an exaggerating story.” coyly Zheng clarified.
■Beyond Love, More Power Saved Her
“Thanks to the help from everybody, she survived. My own strength and ability was just one out of a million. The president of the bank organized a rescue team and got in touch with a fire department in Wuxi, Jiangsu(a province in East China). The firefighters had been working for 24 hours and went here after resting for one hour. What I did was just to encourage her, and that was what I could do.”
Zheng said the rescuers were very brave, “Without them, not possible could He survive. You know how strong the reinfored concrete was. Many media reported that love saved her when the reality is beyond love, there was much more.”
■Girl’s Family: They Can Get Married Any Time
Girlfriend’s nightmare smarts Zheng: “Our romance, also my first love, started two years ago. I’ll marry her as long as she survived, even if she would lost all four limbs, I’ve decided. My former idea was to see her parents with some achievements in career.” Four years older than Zheng, He didn’t tell her family about him. Zheng resigned his position in Chengdu(the capital city of Sichuan province) to attend He. “Doctor said she needs to rest for six months, during which I shall be always with her. When she is able to stand on her own feet, I will bring her to my hometown in Shandong.”
Zhang Yong, the president of the Mianyang Branch of the Agriculture Development Bank, who was in the rescue work of He was inspired by Zheng’s deed, “A nice young man, tolerant and loyal to his girlfriend. I’d like to give a wish to them that their dreams will come true.”
He’s family has been thinking highly of Zheng since the unexpected moment he appeared to find He. “They can get married any time, they have our blessings.” said He’s aunt, one of the family conquered by the kindness and loyalty of the young man.
